A viral encephalitis that has_material_basis_in persistent central nervous system infection of the wild-type measles virus (Morbillivirus hominis) characterized by onset of personality or behavioral changes and intellectual deterioriation years after initial infection, followed by progressive decline in motor function, akinetic mutism or coma, and death. Higher incidence or shorter latency periods may be observed in those initially infected under the age of 2 or in cases of intrafamilial transmission.
